What to look for in an intimate moisturiser

Choosing the right intimate moisturiser is essential for maintaining genital and vaginal comfort, hydration, and health—especially if you're managing genital and vaginal dryness due to menopause, postpartum changes, medications, or hormonal fluctuations.

Here are the key features to consider when selecting the best vaginal moisturiser for your needs:

1. Gentle, Non-Irritating Ingredients (No Nasties)

Always choose an intimate moisturiser that’s free from harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances, dyes, parabens, and preservatives that can irritate sensitive skin. Look for skin-friendly ingredients that are dermatologically tested and formulated for use on delicate genital tissue.

Tip: Always check the label. Learn more about the ingredients we chose—and what we left out—[here].

2. pH-Balanced for Vaginal Health

The vaginal area maintains a naturally acidic pH (usually between 3.5 and 4.5). A pH-balanced vaginal moisturiser helps support the natural microbiome and prevents irritation, infections, or imbalance.

3. Safe Osmolarity Levels

Osmolarity refers to the concentration of particles in a solution. A high osmolarity in a vaginal moisturiser can damage epithelial cells (the protective lining of the vaginal wall).

The World Health Organization recommends an osmolarity level of less than 1,200 mOsm/kg for vaginal moisturisers. Products that exceed this can be too harsh for sensitive tissues.

4. Water-Based vs. Oil-Based Formulas

  • Water-based moisturisers are compatible with latex condoms and are typically easier to absorb. They’re a great choice for everyday hydration and safety during intimacy.
  • Oil-based products offer deep hydration but should be avoided with latex condoms, as they may degrade the material.

Choose the type based on your lifestyle and needs.

5. Deeply Hydrating Ingredients

The most effective intimate moisturisers contain proven hydrating agents that restore and lock in moisture. Look for ingredients like:

  • Hyaluronic acid – a natural humectant. This attracts and retains moisture in the skin.
  • Polycarbophil gel – a commonly used, water-based moisturising agent.

These ingredients help relieve vaginal dryness and improve skin elasticity.

6. Suitable for Regular Use

The best vaginal moisturisers are designed for consistent use—typically three times per week or even daily, depending on your needs. Regular application:

  • Maintains optimal hydration
  • Reduces irritation
  • Promotes healthy skin in the intimate area

In Summary

When choosing an intimate moisturiser, look for:

  • Gentle, non-irritating ingredients
  • pH-balanced formulation
  • Safe osmolarity levels
  • Hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid
  • Water- or oil-based options based on your needs
  • Safe for regular use
